For owners

Your business cannot outgrow the skill of the people running it.

You already know where the ceiling is

You built something that works. It works because you’re in it.

Every important decision routes through you. Every difficult conversation waits for you. Every problem your people can’t solve becomes a problem you solve, usually at night, usually again next month.

You’ve tried hiring your way out of it. You’ve tried delegating. You’ve probably tried a management course for someone who needed it. None of it moved the line, because none of it changed what your people are actually able to do.

That’s the whole problem, and it’s smaller than it feels.

The thing nobody tells you about growth

A business doesn’t stall because the strategy is wrong. Most owners have a perfectly good idea of where they’re going.

It stalls because the gap between where the business is going and what its people can currently do never gets named. So it never gets closed. So the owner closes it personally, every day, until the business is structurally dependent on one person and there’s no version of leaving that doesn’t look like a fire.

Time is not the constraint. Skill is.

How it runs

Three moves, one quarter

Not a transformation. Not a twelve month programme. Three moves, run inside the work you are already doing, over about a quarter.

Name the skills your next stage actually requires

We take where the business is going and resolve it down until it is specific. Not “better leadership”. The actual things specific people need to become able to do, at a size small enough to practise on a Tuesday.

Find out where your people genuinely are

Developmental assessment, not a personality profile. It shows how your key people currently reason about the decisions their roles demand, which is usually the moment you understand why one of them keeps escalating and another one does not.

Build the capability in the work

Your people build their own development plans and practise against them in real conditions. You are involved by design, because you are the only manager most of them have. That is an advantage here, not a problem.

At the end of it you know what changed, and so do they.

OWNER TESTIMONIALS

From other owners

“Prior to engaging with Benny Ausmus I had spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on external contractors and internal management positions that did not solve my root problems.”
Jarrod Conroy, Managing Director, Prana Energy

“The leaders of Design & Build have been working with Benny & Big Change for 2 years and in that time our business has changed greatly, and all for the better.”
Andrew McGregor, Managing Director, Design & Build

Sash Hendrix, Managing Director

“Benny has managed to condense the world’s business process, change, and improvement ideas into a structured and results-orientated idea and concept whilst removing the bullshit.”

Who you hire next
The long game

Who you hire next

Most owners try to solve a skill problem by hiring. Then they hire on instinct, a resume and a good conversation, and eighteen months later they are back where they started, having paid for the lesson twice.

I also run a developmental assessment and recruitment practice. The same unit of measurement runs through both, which means the person you hire can be assessed against the same standard as the people you already have. You stop guessing at the two most expensive decisions a small business makes: who to hire, and who to promote.

NO SUPRISES

What it is not

It is a small number of specific capabilities, built in the work, measured properly, starting with the one that is costing you the most right now.
